The ChatGPT College Planner Is Coming. Is Your College Website Ready?

ChatGPT is about to become a bigger part of the college application process. The College Planner for ChatGPT will help students organize their applications and understand each step, which makes it more urgent for schools to confirm that ChatGPT represents them accurately.

Here's how OpenAI describes its goal for the ChatGPT College Planner:

“We’re designing it to help students manage the practical steps of applying to college, without taking over the personal work of figuring out where they want to apply.”

The tool will pull requirements, deadlines, tasks, and financial-aid steps for a student’s college list into a single plan. It will also help students understand aid requirements, track aid deadlines, and explore scholarships and fee waivers.

Why the Launch of ChatGPT College Planner Matters

Prospective students already use AI to research colleges. According to our research, 63% of prospective students reported using LLMs to discover new colleges they had not considered, and 52% asked LLMs to narrow a list of schools using personal academic information.

The College Planner takes that a step further, from researching schools to managing the application itself. For colleges, that means:

  • AI moves from research into the application. Students will ask ChatGPT about deadlines, requirements, fee waivers, and aid steps, where a wrong answer costs them something real.
  • Students may reach your website with their answer already formed. Our research shows most AI-using students still visit the school website, but they arrive expecting confirmation. If ChatGPT got the details wrong, your site has to correct it.
  • Accuracy depends on what AI can find and read. If ChatGPT can’t locate or interpret the right information on your website, it will rely on other sources, including outdated ones.

Six Actions to Improve Your Website and Prepare for ChatGPT College Planner

ChatGPT already trusts college and university websites as reliable sources. Research from OHO's AI Visibility Platform demonstrates that ChatGPT uses a college or university's website and "owned" sources 70-90% of the time. Preparing for the ChatGPT College Planner means ensuring the website can be read by crawlers, provides answers relevant to prospects, uses well-structured content, and has old content removed.

1. Benchmark the prompts prospects actually use in AI search

Start with the questions high school students ask during the application process, and analyze the sources AI uses to answer them. A third-party AI Visibility tool can run a consistent question set, collect results, and analyze the sources. Based on OpenAI’s announcement, questions about fee waivers, deadlines, and the admissions process matter most – start by benchmarking these questions.

The results show where to focus your website content updates – correcting errors and adding missing content. To build your own question set, our webinar AI and the College Search 2026 explains how students use AI to research colleges.

2. Make sure AI can crawl and read your website

This year, we have found colleges and universities that unknowingly block AI crawlers from their sites. When AI can’t access your school's website, it turns to sources out of your control: Wikipedia, Niche, College Board, Princeton Review, College Factual, and Reddit. If this happens, your school is inadvertently blocking AI from collecting authoritative admission and aid content, and you run the risk that third-party sources are providing this critical information to ChatGPT.

Ask your web team to confirm two things:

  1. Crawlers have access.
  2. Application requirements, costs, and aid instructions appear as readable page text and tables.

OpenAI’s documentation explains how search access differs from model-training permissions – for ChatGPT search, review access for OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI’s search crawler.

Our webinar SEO in the Age of AI covers how page structure, schema, and context affect the way AI interprets your content.

3. Make your application and aid content clear

To ensure your website content can be properly found and used by ChatGPT, we recommend making page-level content clear, clean, consistent, and concentrated.

Specifically for admissions and aid content:

  • Clear – use friendly, everyday language and define terms like “priority deadline” when you use them.
  • Clean – properly label the content – “Fall 2027 first-year application deadlines” gives students and AI far more context than “Important dates.”
  • Consistent – keep requirements aligned across admissions pages, program pages, and downloadable checklists, so students get the same answer wherever they look.
  • Concentrated – content brings related answers together in one complete application guide or “pillar” content: requirements, deadlines, exceptions, policies, and FAQs. If content is spread across too many pages, AI (and your users) struggle to piece together the story.

4. Remove outdated content AI can still find

Errors can come from old content – outdated catalogs, PDFs, and aging news stories. Often, files have been unlinked from web pages, but they remain in public directories and document repositories that can still be crawled. AI is still finding and using information your team thought was retired. To ensure your admission information stays accurate, marketing teams should review publicly accessible PDFs and directories, retire documents you no longer need, and clearly label historical material that has to stay available.

5. Review the other sources explaining your school

AI draws on more than your website. College aggregators, admissions-advising sites, and student discussions can all shape how students understand your application process and your school. Review the sources cited in answers about applying and paying for college, and check whether their information is current.

Update the profiles you manage, request factual corrections where appropriate, and publish clearer institutional answers where your own content has gaps. If an outside site explains your scholarship process better than you do, treat that as a finding and improve your own content.

6. Help students verify what AI told them and take the next step.

OHO’s research found that 79% of AI-using students often or always visit a college website after using AI. While students may arrive at a college or university website already holding an answer or a plan they built in ChatGPT, they will likely want to confirm the information, understand any exceptions, and move forward.

As we discuss in The Real AI Readiness Problem Is Content Readiness, those visits are your chance to validate what students have learned. Make requirements easy to find. Explain what happens after an application is submitted. Give students direct access to admissions and financial-aid advisers, and offer practical guidance before asking anyone to complete an inquiry form. This supports the website approach we recommend: a focused experience for prospective students, backed by comprehensive information AI can access. The site should help a student make a decision and move forward.

Start by understanding where you stand

Preparing for the ChatGPT College Planner comes down to three things:

  • Confirm AI can find and read your website
  • Ensure your content clearly explains the application process in one location
  • Remove outdated or conflicting information from your website, catalog, or old PDFs

Prospective students need accurate answers they can act on. They are already using AI-generated responses to maneuver through the college search process.
